Cutting MMA and martial arts mats is a process that requires precision. There is a certain way to properly cut or trim your mats so that you do not ruin a perfectly good piece of material. Following this guide will not only allow you to trim down the size of your mats, it will also allow you to give them a nice finished edge.
Whether you are working with MMA or martial arts mats, follow these instructions to get the best results.
First Things First: A Warning!
Always remember that every cut you make is permanent! There is no going back. We always recommend that you practice this on a piece of scrap mat first.
If you are really unsure with what you are doing and don’t want to permanently damage your mats, make sure you contact our team at Zebra Athletics for help.
So let’s get to it.
What You Will Need
When cutting mats, you will need to the following:
- Tape measure
- T-square or straight edge
- Utility knife (makes sure it’s sharp for the best results)
- Putty knife
- Fast acting spray adhesive (we recommend 3M™ Super 77 Spray Adhesive).
Make Sure Your Measurements are Correct
Before you begin cutting your mats, use your tape measure to measure the length and width of the space in which your trimmed mat will be placed. Make sure these measurements are exact! If they are too large you will have to go through the process of cutting the mats again. If they are too small you will have an unsightly gap between your mats and the wall.
